Why this matters
Many shippers only check scale weight, but international carriers often invoice based on dimensional weight. The billable weight is whichever is higher between actual and dimensional weight.
Standard dimensional formula
Dimensional Weight = (Length x Width x Height in cm) / divisor.
- Common air divisor: 6000
- Some express channels: 5000
- Sea/line-haul channels may use different standards
How to cut costs safely
- Use right-sized cartons, not oversized boxes.
- Compress void space with protective but compact filler.
- Split parcels only when total billable weight decreases.
- Confirm channel divisor before dispatch.
Before every shipment, verify both actual and dimensional weight to avoid billing surprises.
