The Art of the Deal in Guangzhou
Negotiation in China is expected, but aggressive haggling can backfire by resulting in lower quality goods. Here is how to negotiate smartly.
Effective Strategies
- Know the Base Price: Before negotiating, visit at least 3-4 shops selling similar items to understand the market rate.
- Buy in Bulk: MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) dictates the price. You get significantly better leverage if you combine your orders to reach higher volume tiers.
- Don't Squeeze Too Hard: If you force a supplier below their profit margin, they won't reject the order; instead, they might secretly substitute cheaper materials. Always aim for a win-win.
- Build Guanxi (Relationships): Long-term relationships matter. Promise future orders if the first batch sells well in Malawi, and follow through.
